The Island

the window view to despair
was the view across the water
from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island
on a humid evening
as if the Colony
still wore her crown
and I never knew what to say
of the sight of an island
bedecked with the thousand lights
of stolen jewels
if you sat with me that evening
and dispelled from memory
the ghastly sight of
those mountains of steel
in the day
oh I would have leapt in my heart
the touch of your fingers
of the luminous light that all
the wealth and industry of man
pollutes with
the skies
and arrogantly
the seas
I shall watch the stoning of the Fools
and the burning of the Sanctuary
of the Crones
because you were with me
you held me to your breast
my sanctuary
and with the renunciation of my faith
I redeemed you
from the stoning pits
but there is no island
there is no fool
no sanctuary
and the window view to despair
glows with the electric light
of a screen to silence
in infinite space
