BROAD LINES NOS. 1-3. DECEMBER 3, 2015
Lines made with a brush and distemper on Japanese paper 20″ x 30″
With wider brushes, these broad lines are possible. These are exercises in familiarity with the brush. First, some small exercises are made on a notebook (above) to test the brushes and the distemper in copious amounts of water. Then line exercises are made (below). Wavy lines in the first exercise below are made with a 3/4″ brush. The first line is made with the brush dipped in distemper, and the succeeding lines are a result of constant dipping in water.
The second exercise are lines made with a 1″ brush, this time with sharper and faster strokes than the first exercise. The brush is turned slightly in order to test the strokes made with different sides of the brush.
The third exercise is made with 3/4″ and 1″ brushes. The lighter lines are made first, followed by the darker ones. There is a focus on broad vertical and horizontal lines. Finally, the tip of the brush is used to make the finer lines. This exercise is a depiction of the space at the eastern part of the garden, where there is a small open gate and a footpath. The space is filled with wild vegetation and some bamboo on the outside.
The last mage below shows the brushes used in these exercises. They are all cheap hardware brushes.
