SHADE LINES (COMPARATIVE) Nos. 1-4. November 28-30, 2015
Lines made with a brush and quink/distemper on Japanese paper 20″ x 30″
These are wavy lines made in different shades by changing the amount of water in the ink. There is blotting because of the poor quality of the paper and the high humidity due to the tail-end of a cold front affecting our region. However, I am satisfied with these exercises and will continue more iterations.
I tried to make each line in the series as evenly shaded as possible. The intention is to observe and learn to measure the similarity and dissimilarity between shades. Another intention is to observe the pattern created by repeating a given number of shades available.
Shade Lines (Comparative) No. 1 is made with 5 shades from light to dark then repeating the pattern to make an odd number of lines (13 lines). The first wavy line is made and the rest of the lines are reflections of the previous lines. The first and last lines should be a simple translation with no reflection.

Shade Lines (Comparative) No. 2 is made with 3 shades from light to dark then repeating the pattern to make an even number of lines (14 lines). The first wavy line is made and the rest of the lines are reflections of the previous lines. The first and last lines should be a reflection.
Shade Lines (Comparative) No. 3 is made with 4 shades from light to dark then repeating the pattern to make an odd number of lines (17 lines). The first wavy line is made and the rest of the lines are reflections of the previous lines. The first and last lines should be a simple translation with no reflection.
Shade Lines (Comparative) No. 4 is made with 2 shades from light to dark then repeating the pattern to make an even number of lines (14 lines). The first wavy line is made and the rest of the lines are reflections of the previous lines. The first and last lines should be a reflection.
