Line Transformations

TRANSLATIONS NO. 1-10. November 17, 2015.
Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 27.5″ x 19.5″

These are preliminary exercises in a simple transformation of lines. The first line is made at the leftmost and translations are made sequentially towards the right. Each line translation is based on the previous line. Note the difference between the first and last lines. The lines increase in complexity as the exercise progresses.

These exercises involve an apparent eye-hand coordination. However, because the sequence of lines are made very quickly and almost spontaneously in relation to the previous lines, there is a need to involve visual and motion memory in the production of the work.

Translation No. 1 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 1 consists of first three lines made to test the brush, ink and paper. The next three lines test the movement of the hand in addition to the media.

Translation No. 2 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 2 is a demonstration of changing the weight of each line. The first six lines show changes from light to heavy lines. The last three lines show changes from heavy to light lines.

Translation No. 3 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 3 is a demonstration of changing the shape of each line, alternating from straight to wavy and wavy to straight, keeping line weight as even as possible.

Translation No. 4 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 4 is another exercise in changing the weight of each line, from heavy to light.

Translation No. 5 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 5 consists of reflections of lines from the left to the right, with changes in the weight of each line from heavy to light. Each line translation is based on the previous line. There is an even number of translations. The first and the last lines should be reflections.

Translation No. 6 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 6 consists of reflections of lines from the left to the right, with no changes in the weight of each line. Each line translation is based on the previous line. There is an even number of translations. The first and the last lines should be reflections.

Translation No. 7 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 7 consists of reflections of lines from the left to the right, with changes in line shape from wavy to straight to wavy. There should be no changes in line weight. Each line translation is based on the previous line. There is an odd number of translations. The first and the last lines should be simple transformations, not reflections.

Translation No. 8 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 8 consists of reflections of lines from the left to the right with no change in line weight. There is an even number of translations. The first and the last lines should be reflections.

Translation No. 9 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 9 consists of reflections of more complex lines from the left to the right with minor changes in line weight. There is an odd number of translations. The first and the last lines should be simple transformations, not reflections.

Translation No. 10 Lines made with a brush and quink on Japanese paper 19.5" x 27.5"

Translation No. 10 consists of reflections of more complex lines from the left to the right with minor changes in line weight. Line shape changes from wavy to straight to wavy. There is an odd number of translations. The first and the last lines should be simple transformations, not reflections, however, this has been lost in the translation as a reflection has in fact taken place.
