OBJECTIVE/NON-OBJECTIVE LINES NOS 1-7. December 5, 9, 2015
Lines made with a brush and quink/distemper on Japanese paper 20″ x 30″
Two days of line exercises. Objective/Non-Objective Lines Nos. 1-3 consist of parallel lines made with a broad brush, then the spaces between the lines are filled in with a finer line made with the tip of the same brush. Lines are made quickly. As much as possible, I tried to keep the lines from touching each other. The lines are in different shades in order to see the delineation much better.
Objective/Non-Objective Lines Nos. 4-7 are lines made in a similar technique, with much faster movements, and in some areas, the brush is used nearly dry, creating numerous lines in a single stroke. These lines are a depiction of two young roosters scratching and foraging on the grass.
Non-Objective refers to imagery wherein the lines and shapes do not correspond to any existing object in visual reality. I use the term Objective to denote the use of fundamentally the same lines and shapes but with the intended representation of actual objects in visual reality. The usage of both terms denote the relationship and movement between both modes of representation, which may or may not be figurative depending on the mode of operation.
