BROKEN WITH BLACK BIRD, 2022
Fatima Lasay
9 W x 12 H inches, acrylic on paper 90 gsm
The woman has a blank expression. Her skin is yellow because she is ill. The black bird is flying from the palm of her left hand. There is dirt on her palm. An old monstera plant has crept into her long hair. There is bamboo in the background and a vine is climbing it. The vine seems to be a hybrid of squash and passionfruit. The flowers are all wilted.
I am not a trained psychologist, but as a human being with a certain experience of life, I can see just how devastating the effect of this toxic trilogy would have on an unsuspecting victim:
First she is pushed into contradicting goals by being encouraged to abandon her husband while ignoring her pleas for help to save the relationship. Secondly her expectations arising from the multiple relationships are intentionally thwarted. And then Thirdly she is given the blame for the disastrous psychological results.
As a result of reading Kit Balane’s rebuttal, Fatima’s recent behaviour and her many cries for help to undo the damage caused by Kit Balane became completely understandable.
