Why are we to pray for daily provision even if the food is already there in the refrigerator or on the table? It is expected that people pray for provision when there is shortage, and also for fear of shortage in the future. But how about praying for provision when there is abundance? Not a lot of people pray for provision in times of abundance at all! Surely, we pray to give thanks for the abundance. But when we do pray for provision inspite of abundance, here’s why.
First, amidst our plenty and abundance, praying for provision brings attention away from ourselves and towards God, the Provider. These foods on the table or in the refrigerator or garden are not from us, ultimately, they are from God the Creator. How humbling for us and how rightfully honoring for the LORD!(a) Second, it expresses our total dependence upon God. Our life and all life upon this earth(b), all our achievements and accomplishments, come from and is sustained by God alone(c). And third, we pray that the provision brings us the nourishment we need. All that food on the table is not for entertainment or display. These are God’s way of nourishing our bodies. And so we pray that such health benefits and nourishment be made available for us.(d)
How wonderful is the LORD our God! Amen!
